
Chemistry and Society Class Format
The course uses both an individual and collaborative approach to learning. Students are required to perform readings, homework assignments, and simple experiments at on an individual basis.
At the beginning the course, students are assigned to four or five persons study group which remain together throughout the entire course. Students in these groups work together in class discussing problems and proposing solutions members of these groups take turns presenting their findings and results to the rest of the class. The study groups also work together on the Smithsonian field trip and make a group presentation afterward.
Students are also assigned to conduct an individual research project on a subject of their choice. When their research is complete, they make a formal evaluated presentation to the rest of the class.
