Chemistry and Society provides students with the knowledge of chemistry needed to understand and make informed decisions about many complex problems facing modern society. The course examines the chemistry involved with air pollution, water pollution, our atmosphere is ozone layer, and global warming. Working in small groups, students help each other learn and apply chemistry as they try to understand each of these problems. The use of the scientific method is emphasized throughout the course.

Although this course is designed and presented for non science majors, students will be required to make simple calculations chemistry problems and will be required to balance chemical equation. Students will also perform simple experiments both in the classroom and at home. Most students consider this course to be a little more difficult than NS-304 Science Technology and Society.

The class includes a Saturday field trip to the Smithsonian Institution Museum complex, downtown Washington DC which substitutes for one of the evening meetings. Students will be formed into groups to study an area of the museum. They will make an oral presentation to the rest of the class at the following evening session.
